Oct 4 - Tiles of Hope Mahjong Fundraiser for Breast Cancer Research at Arrowhead Golf Club, Wheaton

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and as a recent survivor of breast cancer myself, I thought it would be fantastic to give back through a mahjong centered fundraiser, bringing the mahjong community together to support breast cancer research via the Chicago nonprofit Lynn Sage Breast Cancer Foundation.

Late last year I was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 43 and it was a complete life-quake.  Everything in my life came to a sudden halt while I focused on my health and doing what I needed to do to get back on the path to wellness.  As a mother, wife, and small business owner this was a frightening time as I navigated endless doctors appointments, anxiety while waiting for test results, and the millions of questions I had - the spiraling was dizzying!  Luckily I was placed with an amazing team of doctors through Northwestern Medicine who guided me through my tests, surgery, treatments, and survivorship care.  I will now undergo screenings every 6 months and will be seeing my doctors regularly for the next 5-10 years minimally.

While this has been a scary time, what sticks with me the most is how all of these incredibly smart people were able to save me because they knew what to do - and they knew what to do because we have smart people out there researching to learn all we can about cancer; how to detect it, how to cure it, and how to keep it from coming back.  This is such important work that has and will continue to save millions of lives.  

 

1 in 8 women (a shockingly high number that I did not realize until going through this myself) will have breast cancer in their lifetime.  While this problem persists, many researchers are losing funding and finding it harder and harder to attract the best and brightest to their field.  After all I have gone through, I have felt the importance of giving back in a meaningful way as I am so grateful for modern medicine and a chance at a renewed lease on life!  This is how the idea for Tiles of Hope formed - as a way to gather as a community around a game we love with the purpose of raising awareness while giving back to a great cause!  I hope you will join us for an amazing day of community, laughter, and mahjong!
